To conserve fuel, they would remain on the tunnel road for two days. Theyâd camp wherever the rest shift caught them. Their crew of sixteen, full of unfamiliar faces, cheered when he shared that only two stations were part of the run.
To distract himself from touching Wye, he counted the burned-out tunnel lamps. More maintenance that needed to be done on the Kingdomâs infrastructure. The road narrowed, their capsule almost grazing the walls. Every few miles, a luminescent, spiral petroglyph emerged from the gloom outside. The unexpected glyphs increased his apprehension on what theyâd find at the last two stations, which were the closest ones to the air shafts leading to the Outside.
Upon arrival at station twenty-five, he breathed a sigh of relief when the station showed no apparent vandalism. But on closer inspection, the power relays were encased in a small mound of orange corrosionâindicative of lapsed maintenance. Not sabotage, but replacing those would take longer than heâd expected.
They worked on the relays in silence. The workersâ muffled prattle kept them company. Cooper and Wyeâs recent practices paid off, because their bodies moved in a synchronized manner, anticipating the otherâs needs, providing the required tool or holding a crystal tube in place while the other worked to recalibrate it.
A few hours later, his thoughts wandered to the chocolate-covered fruit, Wyeâs favorite, packed in the transportâs minute galley. He longed to feed her and progress to licking her fingers clean, and the thought accelerated his pulse when their compusleeves chirped in unison, signaling the end of the workday. Everyone stretched their limbs and walked around, securing tools and repair supplies in their capsules.
Wye eyed the canal while unbuttoning her dark-gray shirt, revealing glorious breasts clad in a black bra. His mouth didnât know what moisture was. Were the areolas hidden by the fabric a beautiful darker shade of her glossy brown skin? She peeled off her work pants, and his mind blanked at the sight of her long, firm legs. Legs he wanted wrapped around him for days.
âIâm taking a quick dip to clean off the grime. Want to join me?â she asked, grabbing the soap out of their bags.
Nodding, he stripped to his boxer shorts.
Her saunter into the water wasnât shy. On the opposite side of the canal, the workersâ incessant chatter stopped. Their barely concealed lust made red spots float in his vision. Heâd take their eyes for daring to gaze upon her. After moving closer so his broad torso shielded her from their probing stares, he took her wrist. âStay close to me.â He wasnât as familiar with these workers as heâd like, so he wasnât sure whether they could be trusted to behave around Wye.
He followed her into the warm, murky water, which did nothing to quench the jealous fire burning within him. They waded toward the center of the canal, the water rising until it covered their knees. Her eyes full of fiery promise, she laced her fingers with his and gave him a cheeky look.
